About PhotoWipe
PhotoWipe is a small, independent privacy tool with one job: strip hidden metadata from photos without damaging them. It exists because the default state of a modern photo file is "more information than you meant to share" — coordinates, devices, timestamps and editing history riding along with every picture.
The tool started with a listing that sold in hours. The seller had photographed a bicycle at home, and the file's GPS data pointed at the hallway where it was shot. Nothing malicious had happened — the camera had simply done what cameras do. Multiply that by every marketplace photo, dating profile, group-chat snapshot and email attachment, and un-wiped files become a quiet, everyday leak.
We built the wipe we wanted to use. Three rules shaped it:
- Lossless or nothing. Files are never re-encoded. Cutting metadata from the container keeps every pixel as shot, which also means a wiped photo is visually indistinguishable from the original.
- Nothing stays. No accounts, no gallery, no uploads to browse later. A photo is wiped in memory and handed straight back — when the download reaches you, our copy no longer exists.
- Funded by users, not surveillance. Servers are paid for by the unlimited plan instead of advertising, so there are no tracking pixels on this site and no data resale — see the Privacy Policy for the specifics.
PhotoWipe is independent: no investor milestones, no engagement metrics to optimize, no reason to know who you are. The guides on this site — what EXIF data is and how geotags expose your location — are written to be useful even if you never run a file through the tool.
What the future looks like: wider format support, on-device wiping in the browser where possible, and better batch tooling for people cleaning whole archives. What will not change: the no-storage rule, the lossless guarantee, and the absence of ads and trackers. A privacy tool that behaves like an ad network is not a privacy tool.
